In 1978, the Spartanburg County Foundation deeded the Camp Croft playhouse to the Little Theatre and it was renamed in 1982 to the David W. The theatre put on its first musical in 1953, Allegro, becoming the first non-professional production of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. The first play at this new location was The Man Who Came to Dinner in 1950. The productions the theatre put on quickly out grew the City Recreation Hall and in 1949 the Spartanburg County Foundation agreed to rent the Camp Croft theatre to the group for $1.00 a year. He and Ed McGrath, Stage Manager and Scenic Designer, were leaders in the early days of the Little Theatre. David Reid, a soldier who had served at Camp Croft and was recently hired at Converse College, took over directing the rest of the season and all subsequent plays until his retirement in 1982. Woodhouse, was performed in November 1946 at the City Recreation Hall. ![]() Later that year in June, the club decided to become the Little Theatre of Spartanburg and elected officers. The Spartanburg Little Theatre began in 1946 when a group of people met at the Cleveland Hotel to form a literary club. ![]()
